The goal of our FoRT Alternate Option Program is for candidates to acquire and demonstrate the competencies assessed on the Foundations of Reading Test (FoRT) and to be prepared to effectively teach reading to a wide range of students in K-12. This option is only available for Special Education candidates as a replacement to the FoRT.
This DPI-approved program is designed to take approximately six to nine months to complete and candidates can start any time after September 1, 2024.
The program consists of three parts: coursework and assignment, coaching and mentoring, and a final portfolio and exit interview. Candidates will be required to work with students in the K-3 and 4-12 grade bands and assignments must be taught to actual students.
